Assassin's Creed Multiplayer Cancelled: Ubisoft Axes AC League Co-op Game
We Almost Had an Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer Game
With the ongoing turmoil at Ubisoft, fans have been patiently waiting for a new multiplayer experience set within the Assassin’s Creed series. However, according to the latest news from Origami, fans will have to wait once again, as Ubisoft has cancelled a co-op multiplayer game.
The project, codenamed AC League, has been officially cancelled. The team at Ubisoft Annecy - known for developing multiplayer experiences for the Assassin’s Creed series since the inception of AC Brotherhood’s multiplayer - was informed that one of their current projects, AC League, would no longer come to fruition. League was intended to build upon the future of Assassin’s Creed multiplayer, starting with a co-op experience that would allow four assassins to join forces in feudal Japan.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows features a season pass with a multitude of content and was likely to see the pass end with the release of League. The new multiplayer mode was intended to reintroduce the co-op features of previous titles, such as Assassin’s Creed Unity. Players would participate in scripted missions with up to four participants.

This isn’t the first Assassin’s Creed multiplayer game to be cancelled at Ubisoft Annecy. Echoes was set to bring the world of Assassin’s Creed back online with a much more ambitious experience, but it was ultimately scrapped as well. However, a few developers began prototyping ideas with borrowed elements from Assassin’s Creed Shadows that would form AC League - the now second cancelled multiplayer project.
The project was set to begin invite-only playtests in May 2026, which would have allowed the team to gather information from the sessions and refine the game for approval from upper management. Unfortunately, with the ongoing restructuring at Ubisoft, League was scrapped along with the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake and many other titles. Somehow, Beyond Good and Evil 2 still managed to survive the restructuring, with the game’s director commenting that the game was unaffected and remains in development 17 years later.
