PS6 Delayed Longer Than Expected? Analyst Predicts PlayStation 6 Push Beyond 2027-2028

The arrival of the PlayStation 6 is likely to take longer than most expect, according to one source.

It goes without saying that the games industry is struggling. Despite the plethora of games available, many may not realize - looking from the outside in - that gaming is having a tough time in 2026. We have posted for months now about the many layoffs since the beginning of the year and before 2026 closed out; studio closures appear to be a constant threat, with Ubisoft being the latest in our coverage of canceled games, studios shutting down, and more layoffs on the way. The survival of the games industry isn’t in immediate danger, but our favorite pastime isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

This uncertainty extends to PlayStation and Xbox’s next-generation consoles. Many believe that players will see news soon about next-gen consoles, with a release date in 2027 or 2028. However, with the current global financial situation and prices rising again and again - the latest increase now affecting RAM prices - one analyst believes that PlayStation will likely have to delay the release of its next console, the PlayStation 6.

In a report on SandStoneInsights, a Japanese outlet spotted by WCCFTech, Senior Research Analyst at MST Financial David Gibson predicts Sony’s third-quarter fiscal year results.

“Gaming division continues to perform well in Q3: Sony's third-quarter results are expected to beat market expectations, driven by sales of both in-house and third-party games.
PlayStation Lifecycle Extended: Sony expects the PS5's lifecycle to be extended, and the PS6's release is likely to be delayed longer than many expected.”

Gibson continues, noting that games and network services remained strong in the third quarter, with a 160-billion-yen ($1 billion USD) profit, and believes third-party software supported the company’s third-quarter performance.

With the likely delay due to price increases, next-generation consoles may surface closer to 2030 - ten years after the release of the PlayStation 5. Nothing has been officially announced about next-gen consoles, other than small talk about future possibilities, such as Sarah Bond discussing Xbox exclusives. So, until any word come from Sony or Microsoft, take this with a grain of salt.

Let us know in the comments what you think of a 2030 next-gen console launch.
