Eidos Montreal Layoffs 2026: Deus Ex Studio Head David Anfossi Leaves After 124 Job Cuts
I once thought that maybe, one day, we would see the return of Adam Jensen. As the years go on, that thought drifts further and further from my mind. Now, it has all but vanished after 19-year Eidos Montréal veteran David Anfossi, the Deus Ex studio head, left the company with studio layoffs have affected 124 employees.
You may think, “Another studio, more layoffs.” While I wouldn’t necessarily disagree, I instead look to the parent company and ask: what the hell are you doing, Embracer? When Embracer went on a studio-buying spree, many of us asked why. What was their plan - their vision - for all of these studios? As the years have gone on, it’s become clear they didn’t have much of a plan at all.
Eidos Montréal is a legendary studio with decades of beloved titles behind it, and it now sits dormant, searching for new life. We’ve already seen studio closures such as Volition, the creators of Saints Row, a studio that lasted 30 years before being shut down. Now, more layoffs have hit, with the Deus Ex studio once again affected. The downfall of not only the industry but Embracer itself continues.

Embracer owns titles fans have been asking to see return for years. Thief - a true Thief title - though the VR experience was fun, had its shortcomings. Deus Ex. Or why not another Guardians of the Galaxy sequel after the incredible success of the first game? Better yet, a brand-new IP. Instead, Embracer currently has more Tomb Raider content in store, with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launching sometime this year and Tomb Raider: Catalyst planned for 2027.
It’s hard to watch as one studio after another is hit with round after round of layoffs. We hope everyone affected by this latest round finds something new soon. Let us know in the comments what you think about the Deus Ex studio head leaving alongside 124 employees.
