Base PS6 Specs Leaked: 1TB SSD No Disc Drive
We got more leaks about the base specs for the long-rumored PlayStation 6 console, from AMD leaker Kepler_L2. Kepler_L2, who has a long history of leaks of the next generation of both the PS6 and Xbox upcoming Project Helix.
Kepler_L2’s first leak came with a bill of the materials being used to build the console, with the leaker estimating that the current price for Sony is about $760 per unit. He did mention there is a chance Sony could sell the units at a loss like it did in previous generations with a retail price of $699, but that is not a guarantee.
As part of his estimation, the leaker mentioned that the standard PS6 is expected to have a 1TB SDD with no disc drive, and with the rising size of games, that could be quite worrying, but Kepler_L2 has clarified why Sony is potentially making this choice.
It's the most obvious area to cut costs, and if PS6 SDK supports neural texture compression, game sizes could even be smaller than PS5.

Both AMD and NVIDIA have been working on NTC’s, though AMDs has had no further news since it was originally announced in 2024, while NVIDIA has publicly shared a pre-release version of their Neural Texture Compression. Early results show NTC can save up to 7x more than current compression standards, meaning a 150GB game could easily be shrunk to 22GB.
Perhaps the shift away from a disc drive, could simply be that console games have entered a fully digital space. A PS5 digital-only edition launched with the original console in 2020, and with the retail market shrinking each year, it could make sense for the PS6 to go full digital.
