Terminal War: Indie Devs Build Spiritual Successor to Cancelled The Last of Us Factions 2
The Last of Us Factions 2 was cancelled nearly two years ago, when Naughty Dog shared the following statement:
“We’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to stop development on that game. We know this news will be tough for many, especially our dedicated The Last of Us Factions community, who have been following our multiplayer ambitions ardently.”
All is not lost, however, as a follow-up to the brutal, team-based multiplayer experience may live on after all. This comes from a post on X, which reads as follows:
“They cancelled The Last of Us Factions 2. So we're building our version. We're indie and entirely self-funded. 4v4. Limited ammo. Brutal executions. This is Terminal War. Unofficial gameplay teaser.”
The reveal has caught a few eyes, surpassing half a million views in just a few days after the announcement. After speaking briefly with the team at Albatross Interactive, I learned they are a small group consisting of two co-founders and approximately ten additional remote team members, all working together to create Terminal War in Unreal Engine 5.

The game draws heavy inspiration from The Last of Us Factions 2, which was cancelled a couple of years ago. The team’s goal is to create a serious, mature, competitive shooter that rewards patience, teamwork, and spatial awareness over fast reflexes. Terminal War is set in the aftermath of World War III, where three factions fight for control of the remnants of a 1990s-inspired, post-war-torn America.
It’s easy to say that many fans were disappointed when the cancellation of Factions 2 was announced. However, when one door closes, another opens. Hopefully, that door is wide open for Albatross Interactive, as they look to create what could possibly be a refreshing entry in the multiplayer genre - one that fans have been hungry for.
