Splinter Cell Remake Still in Production Despite 40 Ubisoft Toronto Layoffs

Splinter Cell Remake remains in production, despite the announcement of staff layoffs at the Toronto studio.

Yesterday, it was confirmed that Ubisoft will lay off approximately 40 employees at their Toronto studio, representing around 8% of the office. The Toronto-based studio created Watch Dogs: Legion and Far Cry 6, both of which have scores in the mid-70s on Metacritic. The studio has also contributed to other titles, most recently assisting with Star Wars Outlaws.

“This decision was not taken lightly and does not in any way reflect the talent, dedication, or contributions of the individuals affected,” a spokesperson told MobileSyrup. “Our priority now is to support them through this transition with comprehensive severance packages and robust career placement assistance.”

Although the studio will lay off staff, Ubisoft stated that the Toronto studio will remain “a key contributor to several codev mandates and service teams,” in addition to continuing development of the Splinter Cell Remake, which was first revealed in 2021.

This latest round of layoffs follows recent restructuring within the company, which included the cancellation of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake, the closure of Ubisoft Halifax, and other project changes. If you missed yesterday’s news, PlayStation also laid off employees with the closure of Bluepoint Games.
