At this point, every day that passes until GTA 6 finally releases seems to add more and more expectations to the game. As a back-to-back winner of The Game Awards’ Most Anticipated Game and expected to achieve sales numbers once thought unimaginable, GTA 6 can do just about anything and still be successful. Now, rumors are swirling that it might be joining a dying genre.

Reality or Bored Speculation?

The MMORPG genre, once a stalwart in the gaming sphere with titles such as World of Warcraft, EverQuest, and others, has declined over the last decade, with some even believing the genre is on its way out. That could be changing, according to Rich Vogel, who in an interview with WCCFTech says that GTA 6 is leaning in the direction of becoming the next big MMORPG:

“Yes, I believe a large audience is waiting for the right MMORPG to emerge. Consider the millions of players who have played and continue to play WOW, SWTOR, ESO, UO, EverQuest, Fallout 76, and others. The problem is that no publisher is willing to invest the money and take the risk at this time. My instinct tells me that the next major MMORPG will likely come from Asia and/or Europe. If what I have been hearing about GTA 6's features and gameplay is true, it could evolve into an MMORPG, as many of its planned features are typically found in MMORPGs.”

One Mod to Rule Them All

Much of this speculation revolves around the massive popularity and subsequent acquisition of Cfx.re, the makers of the hugely popular GTA 5 mod FiveM. The mod transformed GTA 5’s base multiplayer into something you usually see in MMORPGs, with players able to play dedicated “classes” such as police officer or paramedic, and allowing for higher player counts. While Rockstar has yet to reveal any plans about the online mode, the fact that they brought in the makers of a highly popular mod could indicate massive plans for GTA 6’s online mode.
