Sony May Delay PS6 to 2028 or 2029 Amid AI-Fueled RAM Shortage

Sony May Delay PS6 to 2028 or 2029 Amid AI-Fueled RAM Shortage

The next generation of PlayStation consoles could be pushed back to 2028 or possibly 2029, according to Bloomberg in a piece on the ongoing ‘RAMmageddon’ crisis. Citing sources familiar with Sony’s strategic thinking, the article claims a delay of the next generation console from Sony is being considered.

It appears that Sony consoles might not be the only ones taking a hit. Bloomberg also claimed that Nintendo is considering raising the price of the Switch 2 later this year. Neither Sony nor Nintendo has responded to requests for comment on the Bloomberg piece.

Of course, the big issue in all this is the recent rise in demand for RAM, with the surge mainly attributed to AI data centres buying up large quantities impacting supplies. The shortage might not have a solution on the horizon either, with Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanging saying “this structural imbalance between supply and demand is not simply a short-term fluctuation."

Speaking at a recent conference, Tim Archer, CEO of chip equipment supplier Lam Research Corp, was even more dire in his statements to attendees.

“We stand at the cusp of something that is bigger than anything we’ve faced before. What is ahead of us between now and the end of this decade, in terms of demand, is bigger than anything we’ve seen in the past, and, in fact, will overwhelm all other sources of demand.”

Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have all increased the price of their systems in recent years, a flip from the usual trend of consoles dropping in price over the course of the generation. PS5 costs rose several times in 2022 and 2025; the Switch 1 had prices increase in the US last year, though the Switch 2 has remained at its release price for now.

Which is more worrisome, the fact current generation consoles continue to rise in price or that future generation consoles could be facing large scale delays? Let us know in the comments and make sure to join our GamerzTheory Discord.
