DayZ 2 Trademark Filed by Bohemia Interactive: Sequel Finally in the Works?

Every year it seems we get some big gaming news on April 1st, and it's always hard to know if it's real or not. That is the case with Bohemia Interactive who filed for trademark protection for DayZ 2 yesterday. While rumors have been swirling for some time about a successor to one of the pioneers of the survival genre, it seems that day is coming sooner rather than later.

Several job posts have been spotted in recent months for an unannounced title in the DayZ series. This filing appears to reveal the future for the game. Of course, DayZ 2 is most likely to require a new engine, as the current Effusion engine for DayZ lags behind the current industry and even Bohemia Interactive’s other hit series, as Effusion hails from the Arma 2 days.

Of course, it will most likely be awhile before anything is even officially announced for DayZ 2, as trademark registration is often one of the first steps, and simply signals enough interest to start the project, not confirm that the game has been built in the background.

DayZ has a new expansion, Badlands, coming up later this year, and it will be interesting to see how this fits into the future landscape of the franchise with a sequel in the works. Could this be a testing ground for new mechanics or a way to keep the player base engaged as developers move into a new title?
