Obsidian Plans More Avowed Games, No Outer Worlds 3 After Underwhelming Sales
In a recent Bloomberg interview with Fergus Urquhart, the head of Obsidian, it appears that neither Outer World 2 nor Avowed sold enough copies to meet expectations. While Urquhart is not quoted directly about the results, it was stated that both games had disappointing results, with Urquhart simply stating the games made us “think a lot about how much we put into the games, how much we spend on them, how long they take."
Going on, Urquhart explained that both games were in development for over six years, and his goal is to cut that down to three or four years per title going forward. The article did confirm that Obsidian is still working on content for The Outer Worlds 2, but there are no current plans to make Outer Worlds 3.

Urquhard did state the studio has more plans to “keep making games in the Avowed universe” and while that might not mean Avowed 2 exactly, gamers can expect more titles in the same universe as Avowed and Pillars of Eternity.
In addition to Outer World 2 and Avowed, Obsidian also released Ground 2 last year, which was referred to as a “big hit.” Though studio design director Josh Sawyer said it was not deliberate that the studio released three new titles last year, and despite Xbox hailing it as the “year of Obsidian” it was not necessarily a good thing.
“Spacing those releases helps the company manage its resources and not burn everybody out. It’s not good to release three games in the same year. It’s the result of things going wrong.”
Avowed is set to release on PlayStation 5 on February 17th, alongside an anniversary update for the PC and Xbox versions. This will include New Game Plus, new races and weapon types, and a photo mode. All of which will be available in all three game versions simultaneously.
