Fable Reboot: Fairytale World Details, Enter Every Building, 1000 Handcrafted NPCs

Fable finally pulled back the curtain during the most recent Xbox Developer_Direct and now even more info has come pouring about the latest title in the series. Though we are still awaiting more story details, as the devs have yet to confirm if the original trilogy is canon yet.

Fable is Fairytale Not Fantasy

What we have learned about the game is that the world is quite detailed, every single building has an interior, and the player can enter every house in the world, and rob them if you want. The guiding principle for the game has been simple: "Fable is fairytale, not fantasy”, which was found in an old document left in the Lionhead Studios archives.

No NPC in the game is procedurally generated, all 1000 NPCs are handcrafted with unique personalities and daily schedules. Each with their own name, voice, and design to stand out from the other ones. Not only can players get married and divorced, but the reputation system is much more involved than previous Fable games. Helping out one NPC can make another hate you. However, what you do in one town is not immediately known on the map, and reputations do not impact the entire map.

The game itself is built on ForzaTech, the engine that runs the Forza series, with the developers noting a lot of work had to go into making sure the engine could handle basic things such as cinematics and questing. The world is smaller than what you get in Forza, as the game was built around slow exploration, horses, not supercars. Density of content was a primary focus over sheer size, which allows the details of each house to be achieved.

Perhaps the only sad note was the lack of a dog companion. With the devs nothing they simply ran out of time, but did say not to rule it out in the sequel. Playground Games has been working on this iteration since 2016 as a passion project with a team built with Fable fans. Currently set for an August 2026 release, the devs did note they are happy to be releasing on PS5 to get as many people into the Fable universe as possible.
