Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Speak Out on Act 1 Montage "Not Cut Content, It Prevents Unfocused Gameplay"
Cyberpunk 2077’s launch back in 2020, might be one of the worst in recent memory. However, one part of the game that has been widely discussed as potential cut content was recently revealed to have been intentional. In Act 1 there is a half-year montage that helps set the stage for the heist that puts the story in motion as V is propelled to the top of the Night City mercenary world.
Keeping Players Focused
Players have often discussed that the montage was a replacement for cut content. However, it was recently revealed by creative director Igor Sarzynski that this was not the case. Sarzynski compared the montage to a scene from the first Star Wars movie: “It's like saying we should spend more time on Tatooine with farmer Luke before he got involved with all this Jedi stuff," going on to say that creating a goal of “get to the top” would have been too vague to create a meaningful experience;
"The motivation / goal in this section of the game is pretty vague 'get to the top' which, prolonged and without stakes or pressure, would result in a meandering, unfocused experience,"
"Do jobs, make money, make reputation" - ok but what for? What are you trying to achieve? There would have to be a more specific goal for this section. 'Do stuff' without a clear hurdle to clear would make a lot of players bounce off the game."

Despite Saryznski's comments, several users replied saying a reputation system could have been used to make the goal of reaching the top feel more tangible. Which Sarzynski did admit would have been possible but required a significant story rewrite. With Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, in the works, we will be curious as to what direction CD Projekt Red takes the game.
