Assassin’s Creed Dev Confirms More Dual Protagonists Coming Despite Yasuke & Naoe Backlash

Assassin’s Creed Could Feature Two Heroes in the Future

Ubisoft’s associate director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows says future Assassin’s Creed titles could feature two protagonists, even though Yasuke and Naoe - the latest heroes - have received a lot of backlash.

When the latest title in the Assassin’s Creed series was revealed and showcased Yasuke, a Black samurai, the internet did not receive the new hero with open arms. Yasuke was a samurai of African origin who served Oda Nobunaga between 1581 and 1582. Ubisoft did, in fact, follow the history books for Yasuke. However, some accused Ubisoft of being ‘woke’ with the addition of these two protagonists.

Long-time fans will know that Shadows was not the first time the series featured two protagonists. This goes back to Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, when Jacob and Evie Frye infiltrated the criminal underworld of Victorian London.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, associate director Simon Lemay Comtois mentioned the series could feature two protagonists in the future, despite the feedback regarding the heroes in Shadows.

“Dual protagonists can be divisive along very strange lines, right?” Comtois said. “It’s not just ‘well, I prefer a war, therefore I prefer Yasuke’. Some people just don’t like one character over the other, and they don’t like to spend time with one.”

He continued “It was true with Evie and Jacob, but with Naoe and Yasuke it’s more divisive. And we knew this. We knew going into it, but I think it can split our fan base a little too.”

He added: “he added: “I think the learning for us is that, yes, we could do more dual protagonist games in the future, if we have a good reason to do it narratively and for the setting.”

We’ve seen Ubisoft focus on the parkour aspect of Shadows recently with new updates, where Comtois said they need to pay more attention to parkour in future games, “as its own pillar.” The series was known for its parkour, but later games drifted away from the mechanic more than fans appreciated.

“We’re trying to rectify that in post launch with Shadows and push that narrative internally to say parkour matters.”
