Just a few weeks ago, 1047 Games, developers of Splitgate, had relaunched Splitgate 2 after a terrible initial launch under the new name Splitgate: Arena Reloaded. The new game was a fusion of the best parts of the original game and the sequel in what appears to have been a hope to finally deliver on the founders' promise to “make FPS great again.”

Concern or Click Bait?

Unfortunately for 1047 Games, the attempt to rebrand has fallen flat, with SteamDB showing the game peaking at just over 2000 players before struggling to maintain a four-digit player count in recent weeks. 1047 Games has responded to the recent news surrounding Splitgate: Arena Reloaded’s population struggles with a statement on X

"Steam Charts don't measure fun. They show one number, on one platform, at one given moment. They don't show the full picture or what it feels like to actually play, and they definitely don't capture the community that's actively helping shape what Arena Reloaded is becoming (including upcoming content like Arena Royale)."

Splitgate: Arena Reloaded is available on Steam along with Epic Game store, PS5 and Xbox, so it is important to note that SteamDB is only showing a slice of the potential player base, and the other platforms do not release player numbers. However, the fact 1047 Games has felt the need to respond does bring to question whether or not the overall player base is suffering. The fact their first statement is about measuring fun and not about overall player count is quite telling.

Without official numbers, we cannot for sure say that Splitgate: Arena Reloaded is dying based on just the Steam numbers, but for any PvP game, a healthy population is the lifeblood of its success. The fact that Splitgate 2 had to be rebranded and re-released under a new title is a bit concerning for the game’s future. After a hard start with the original Splitgate, it seems the sequel might join an ever-growing list of games that end up as one-hit wonders.
