Sad news today, as Vince Zampella, the founder of Infinity Ward and current head of the Battlefield franchise was killed in a car accident on Sunday afternoon.

Zampella, according to the California Highway Patrol, was involved in a single-vehicle accident around 12:45pm on Sunday. Zampella who was driving was trapped in the car, after it veered off the road and collided with a concrete barrier, where a fire broke out, the passenger who has not been identified was ejected from the car and died at the hospital.

Vince had been in charge of the Battlefield Franchise since 2021, though might be best known as the founder of two of the biggest studios in gaming, Infinity Ward and Respawn Entertainment. Zampella was a key figure in birthing the Call of Duty franchise with Call of Duty 4 released in 2007. He left Infinity Ward in 2010 and founded Respawn helping to develop beloved titles such as Titanfall, and Apex Legends after being acquired by EA.

Zampella also played a key role in the release of the most recent Battlefield 6, which has been a massive hit after years of the franchise losing its grip in the FPS market. The reaction to his passing in the community has been wide with EA releasing a statement earlier today

“This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince’s family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work,” the company said. “Vince’s influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching. A friend, colleague, leader and visionary creator, his work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers around the world. His legacy will continue to shape how games are made and how players connect for generations to come.”

Zampella was 55 years old and left behind three children. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Vince Zampella.
