Erosion Revealed: Mind-Blowing Open-World Roguelike Where Every Death Jumps Time Forward 10 Years
The Xbox Partner Preview was an exciting tease of several games expected to launch in the first half of 2026. The Preview event was also the perfect opportunity to reveal Erosion.
Erosion is an open-world roguelike developed by Plot Twist (known for The Last Case of Benedict Fox) and produced by Lyrical Games (creators of Valor Mortis). It is coming to Steam and Xbox on PC sometime in Spring 2026. From the reveal trailer, we know that the game takes place—at least initially—in the Wild West. The protagonist appears to be an immortal gunslinger on a quest for revenge, aiming to rescue their daughter from a time-hopping warlord. In true roguelike fashion, the protagonist dies repeatedly at the end of each run and is respawned to begin the process again. The unique element of Erosion is that each time the player respawns, time moves forward by a decade.
So, with every death, the story, the world, and presumably your kidnapped daughter all age about ten years!
According to the official website, the game will take place in an open world that responds to the player's actions. The developer claims that the map, buildings, and other elements are destructible, and that there are hundreds of different weapons and items to choose from. Given the time travel mechanic, it will be interesting to see what kinds of weapons and items become available from the future. Likewise, the world and NPCs will logically change to reflect the passage of time.
What sets this game apart from other roguelikes is the way the player interacts with the world in specific and meaningful ways. The results of those actions could impact shopkeepers or other NPCs in the area. Fast forward several deaths later, and the in-game world has evolved around the previously affected NPCs. If executed well, this mechanic will ensure that each playthrough is different, and the variety of outcomes could make Erosion a memorable and much-discussed game long after its release.
