Starfield's Best Version Yet: Free Lanes Update + Terran Armada DLC Preview

Starfield Free Lanes and Terran Armada - “It’s the Best Version of Starfield” - Tim Lamb.

Starfield is in an interesting place right now. The game launched to mixed reception nearly three years ago as players began exploring the Settled Systems. Some players fell in love with the experience, while others found the empty landscapes missing that special Bethesda charm.

The team working on Starfield has been listening, which is where the latest expansions - Free Lanes and Terran Armada - stem from: player feedback. Bethesda has also revealed Starfield will join the galaxy on PlayStation 5 alongside the latest update on April 7th.

I was invited to get a look into the future of Starfield and see firsthand just what Bethesda has in store for those who may have left the game a while back, as well as for those still exploring the galaxy and enduring danger as the Terran Armada begins to ensure its reign of a complete takeover. Tim Lamb, Lead Creative Producer at Bethesda Game Studios, mentioned early in the presentation that the team:

“Wasn’t trying to reinvent the game; they were trying to build on what’s there, highlight what’s great, and expand where they can bring more fun.”

This truly means that if you didn’t fall in love with Starfield from the beginning, the game likely won’t suddenly click with you now. It’s more of what hardcore fans already love, mixed with improvements, new items, and another faction to worry about during your adventure across the Settled Systems.

The latest update comes from community feedback - speaking with players and understanding their needs - while also addressing systems the team wanted to refine or expand themselves. No, this isn’t Starfield 2.0, as many have assumed from rumors and leaks. In fact, when asked whether Free Lanes should be considered Starfield 2.0, Lamb replied:

“No, this isn’t Starfield 2.0.”

“No, no, no. I would push back on that. I think there is a certain narrative baked into what that would mean. I think we’ve looked at a number of systems where we had interest, or where we had heard things from the community, and we tried to level up a number of different systems.”

Lamb continued:

“Free Lanes is huge, and getting that in and making it work with all the existing content we shipped at launch. I wouldn’t call it 2.0, but a number of systems have been made insurmountably better. We’ve added a ton of content - it’s the best version of Starfield.”

So what do Free Lanes and Terran Armada mean for players?

First, Terran Armada adds new story content. The narrative continues with a new faction: the Terran Armada, a military force of robots under human command. This storyline introduces new questlines, characters, locations, enemies, rewards, and more.

Free Lanes, on the other hand, is a free base-game update that adds new features and systems, including Cruise Mode. With Cruise Mode enabled, players are guided toward objectives while being free to walk around their ship, upgrade gear, talk to crew members, and manage inventory - all while autopilot handles your travels to the next destination.

A new resource has also been added: X-Tech. This resource allows players to enhance their gear more freely, enabling them to significantly overpower enemies with upgraded weapons and suits. X-Tech can also be used to modify ships, including the new boost stealth drive, which lets players camouflage their ship and escape dangerous situations undetected by boosting away to another planet.

Outposts have received notable improvements as well. Alongside new Freestar and Crimson Fleet cosmetics, several quality-of-life enhancements have been introduced. One standout feature is shared Outpost storage, allowing resources gathered at one Outpost to be accessed from another. Players can also deploy a fully furnished apartment instantly, helping them establish Outposts quickly before moving on. For those who truly want to live among the stars, a new Asteroid player home will be available and fully customizable.

Free Lanes focuses heavily on player-requested improvements. It adds a new land vehicle - the Moon Jumper - new crew members such as Muria, greater control over Quantum Essence, and additional gameplay refinements.

The Free Lanes update will be available for free on April 7 for all players. The Terran Armada DLC will cost $9.99, unless you purchased the Premium Edition on Xbox or Steam, in which case the new story content will be included at no additional cost.

Additional features included in the update:

  • New locations - A variety of new encounters, points of interest, dungeons, and increased environmental variety
  • X-Tech - A new resource used to upgrade weapons, ship modules, and more
  • Enemy modifiers - New enemy tiers with performance modifiers such as extra shielding, elemental damage, or increased attack frequency
  • Moon Jumper - New land vehicle
  • Outpost improvements - Cross-Outpost storage and the Milliewhale pet
  • New crew - Muria and the mini-bot
  • Starborn improvements - Ability to bring a limited number of items through the Unity into NG+

This latest step forward for Starfield introduces a wealth of new features inspired by player feedback, alongside a brand-new story to explore. It does leave me questioning whether I’ll jump back in. I’ve certainly had my fill of Starfield, but there’s still plenty left on the table - more to explore, build, and gather in pursuit of crafting the ultimate Starborn character.

Much like The Witcher 3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, or the upcoming Crimson Desert, Starfield is a game that demands full attention and a serious time commitment to reap its full rewards. As Lamb said, “this is the best version of Starfield.” I don’t doubt that at all. It genuinely has me considering that now may be the time to return to the galaxy I once called home.
