EXCLUSIVE: Neojac Entertainment Reveals All on Frontier Legends Q&A
Frontier Legends Q&A
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Neojac Entertainment’s CEO, Jacques Rossouw, to ask him about their upcoming survival title, Frontier Legends. Set against an open, old‑west landscape, I was able to learn more about the game and the team’s production process at Neojac.
We’d like to thank Jacques for taking the time to answer our questions. Enjoy!
What inspired Neojac Entertainment to create Frontier Legends, and how did you decide to blend survival, crafting, and exploration in a Wild West open-world setting?
Frontier Legends was inspired by the spirit of frontier life, the idea of arriving in a vast, untamed land where every choice matters. At Neojac Entertainment we have a strong background in survival games, so combining survival mechanics with a Wild West setting felt like a natural evolution. We wanted players to experience the journey of a settler arriving with very little and gradually carving out a place in a dangerous but beautiful frontier. The Wild West setting provides a perfect backdrop for survival, exploration, and player-driven stories.

Can you walk us through the core gameplay loop for a new settler starting from a small camp and building up to a thriving settlement?
Players begin as a new settler arriving on the frontier with limited supplies. Early gameplay focuses on gathering resources, crafting basic tools and generating income by selling resources and crafted items. As players progress, they unlock the ability to purchase land plots and construct buildings such as resource huts, farms, and worker housing. The type of land plot they acquire, whether a farm plot, town plot, or fortress plot determines the type of gameplay they will experience and what structures they can build. Over time, their small camp evolves into a functioning ecosystem with hired workers producing materials and resources, allowing players to shift their focus toward exploration, trading and expanding their influence across the frontier.
Settlement management seems central to the gameplay - how does recruiting and assigning tasks to NPC settlers work, and what happens if you neglect them?
Players can hire settlers who specialize in different professions such as farming, woodcutting, or resource gathering. These settlers can be assigned to specific buildings where they perform tasks and produce materials over time. However, settlers also have needs and must be paid for their work. They require housing, rest and a well-managed settlement to remain productive. If players neglect their workers or fail to provide the necessary infrastructure, productivity will decline and settlers may eventually leave to seek better opportunities elsewhere.
Exploration involves quests, puzzles, and treasures - what kinds of mysteries will players uncover beyond the rails?
Beyond the main settlements and rail lines, the frontier holds many secrets. Players will discover abandoned locations, hidden treasures, environmental puzzles, and story-driven encounters scattered across the landscape. Some discoveries are purely rewarding, while others hint at larger mysteries surrounding the region. We want exploration to feel meaningful, where curiosity is often rewarded.
When it comes to multiplayer support and co-op – what can players expect? Will there be PvP raids and community events - how are you balancing cooperative building with competitive elements like outlaws and bandits in the MMO landscape?
Frontier Legends supports both single-player and cooperative multiplayer. Players can build settlements together, explore the frontier as a group and tackle challenges that are more difficult alone. We are also introducing outlaw-style gameplay elements and dynamic world events that encourage player interaction. Our focus is on cooperative survival and frontier storytelling, with competitive elements designed to enhance tension without disrupting the experience for players who prefer building and exploration.

Dynamic weather, day-night cycles, and wildlife add unforgiving survival challenges - what tech or systems ensure these feel immersive and fair?
We use dynamic environmental systems that simulate changing weather, temperature shifts, and wildlife behavior across the frontier. These systems influence survival mechanics such as resource availability, travel difficulty, and player visibility. Our goal is to make the world feel alive and reactive, while ensuring players always have tools and strategies to adapt rather than feeling punished by randomness.
Frontier Legends is heading to Early Access - what key features will be available at launch, and how will player feedback shape development?
Early Access will introduce the core frontier experience including exploration, settlement building, crafting systems, survival mechanics, and cooperative multiplayer. We plan to expand the game significantly during Early Access. Player feedback will directly influence new features, balance changes and content updates as we continue to build out the world and systems.
As a small indie studio, what were the biggest challenges in scoping an ambitious open-world MMO-like game with single-player options?
The biggest challenge is balancing ambition with scope. We want to create a large and immersive frontier while maintaining the quality players expect. Our approach has been to build the game in stages, focusing first on the core survival and settlement systems. From there we expand the world and features over time, allowing us to grow the game alongside the community.
Frontier Legends will likely be compared to Rockstar’s - Red Dead Redemption 2’s Online game mode. How will you face the comparison and stand up to the challenge that will have Frontier Legends stand on its own?
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an incredible game, but Frontier Legends focuses on a different experience. Our game emphasizes survival, settlement building and player-driven frontier development. Instead of simply living in the world, players shape it. They build towns, recruit settlers and establish their own frontier legacy.

What's your vision for post-launch content?
Post-launch content will focus on expanding the frontier. This includes new regions to explore, new settlement types, additional professions and evolving world events. We also plan to introduce new story elements and seasonal content that continue to build on the living world of Frontier Legends.
How do you balance core survival needs (hunger, resources) with freedom for exploration and role-playing without frustrating players?
Our philosophy is that survival mechanics should support exploration rather than restrict it. Systems like hunger and resource management create tension and meaningful decision making, but they are balanced so players can still enjoy long exploration journeys. As players progress and build stronger settlements, survival becomes less about basic needs and more about strategic planning and frontier expansion.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
