Valve's Steam Machine Is PlayStation's True Next-Gen Rival - Not Xbox - Says Former Xbox Exec
One former Xbox executive believes that the upcoming Steam Machine will be the true competition for PlayStation. While we are in uncertain times - this being Valve’s first serious attempt to enter the living‑room console space - one major question remains unclear: how much will Valve price the Steam Machine console competitor?
According to Mike Ybarra, via WCCFTech:
“They (meaning Sony) see the last nail in the coffin with Xbox and the churn there (hope it turns around).”
With recent news of PlayStation pulling back on single‑player games on PC, this sentiment appears increasingly relevant. This shift may be influenced not only by the rumored Xbox/PC hybrid ecosystem coming together, but also by Valve entering the console market and keeping PlayStation’s biggest titles - such as future God of War, Horizon 3, Wolverine, and others - off PC consoles entirely.
Ybarra continued:
“Most important: they view Valve as a major new competitor. Valve will enter the living room and console market with Steam Machine and likely third‑party variants of it, all running on SteamOS. Valve doesn’t make many mistakes, and Sony is smart to realize that. Shipping good exclusive games matters. It’s not rocket science.”
Not rocket science - but where are all of the Xbox exclusives going? To their competitors: PlayStation and PC.

PlayStation may be waiting in the wings to see exactly what Valve’s intentions are when the Steam Machine is finally released. Valve itself has stated that it is currently waiting on parts due to the GPU shortage, which has delayed reveals during these challenging times.
Not everyone agrees with Ybarra’s assessment, however. Many believe the Steam Machine will be priced more like a high‑end PC, making it a niche product rather than a true competitor in the way Xbox once was. Linus from Linus Tech Tips spoke with Valve, who stated:
“They did offer me one hint, though: they said that while they expect it to be very competitively priced with a PC, it will be priced like a PC rather than like a console, with games subsidizing the upfront hardware purchase.”
This then begs the question: is the Steam Machine truly a competitor to PlayStation? Let us know in the comments how you feel about Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine being the next challenger to PlayStation.
