Highguard Live Now: Game Awards Spot Ruined Shadow Drop Strategy

Highguard burst onto the scene during The Game Awards last year, given the prestigious final trailer spot during the show. Which led to several questions about the previously unheard of game. Today is finally the day, as the hero-shooter went live this morning, and while the build-up has been very awkward with little fanfare from the devs, the YouTube channel for the game did not post a single thing between The Game Awards trailer and today's release. We have learned a little more about how Highguard ended up in this situation.

Geoff Keighley Changed Everything

Vice President of Product and Publishing, Jason Torfin, has since revealed that the plan all along for Highguard was to be a shadow-drop: “Let the game speak for itself. It was always the plan.” Plans, however, quickly changed after The Game Awards host, Geoff Keighley, who liked the game so much, offered the final trailer spot to Highguard. Rumors are the previous game had to back out but nothing is confirmed.

Torfin went on to say the trailer used at The Game Awards was meant to be the shadow-drop trailer and was not meant to educate, which resulted in the awkward marketing that followed. Keighley, who has now taken more of center stage in the whole game after the latest reveals, has been very confident in his decision with a simple tweet awaiting apologies once the game goes live.

What are your expectations for Highguard? Could it revive the hero-shooter genre like Marvel Rivals or could we be witnessing a Concord 2 moment? Let us know what you think of the game in our Discord TheGamerzTheory.
