The extraction shooter genre has been quickly growing just as Battle Royale modes exploded with the likes of PUBG, Fortnite and eventually Warzone and, as of late, Battlefield 6 having joined the BR game mode with RedSec.

Now, another genre that’s catching fire lately has been the Extraction Shooter scene. Easily the largest game in the genre is Escape from Tarkov. Battlestate Games, the developers behind the incredibly successful subgenre, first launched Escape from Tarkov in 2016 in the form of a closed beta. A year later, Battlestate Games opened the doors to more players by purchasing a pre-order of the game and freedom to speak about the extraction shooter online.

Nearly nine years later, Escape from Tarkov is ready to launch into 1.0 and, for the first time, come to the biggest PC platform: Steam launching tomorrow on November 15th. Game Director Nikita Buyanov sat down with WCCFTech to discuss the road ahead with the upcoming launch and just where the team plans to go next with Escape from Tarkov.

Buyanov was quick to point out how the studio has grown over the course of the nine-year development, and with them, “an entire generation of players.” Not only did Battlestate Games bring a generation of players with them along for a journey of unknowns and obstacles in the form of various subsystems that would prevent them from a quicker launch. But they are the creators of a subgenre that has grown in popularity thanks to them.

When asked about other successful games joining the genre, the latest high rise, ARC Raiders. Buyanov humbly mentions: “We are only happy about it. After all, the more good games, the better.” But unfortunately, many try to become the next Tarkov Killer.

“We never had the goal of climbing onto that pedestal. We are simply making a game. A game that we ourselves enjoy, and which, in its uniqueness, is suited specifically for hardcore players. That's all.”

The interview continued with discussion about 1.0's new content, the story, and players finally being about to Escape from Tarkov. Not to mention adding in a Death Cam along with the team's roadmap. Death Cam is coming, but not at launch and there are plans for DLC after release with “Scav Life” among many other features for the future of the game.

The team has “very big plans” to expand the universe as they continue development and deepening the Tarkov experience.
