Rumors have been swirling around about the next PlayStation console, with many believing that the PlayStation 6 is likely to launch sometime in 2027. However, in an earnings call held on Tuesday, Sony’s CFO Lin Tao went on to say the PlayStation 5 is only in the middle of its lifespan.

The PlayStation 4 had a longer than usual lifecycle, launching in 2013, that would be followed by the launch of the PlayStation 5 in 2020. Many today are still playing the PS4, sited Tao, as console life cycles “seem to be getting longer and longer.”

Now with the PlayStation 5 heading into its sixth year since launch, and selling over 84 million units, the install base is growing larger and larger. Tao went on to say, “And from that perspective, we believe that the PS5 is only in the middle of the journey, and we are really planning to expand it even further.”

Now this doesn’t mean we won’t see the PlayStation 6 launch sometime in 2027. It will be seven years with the PlayStation 5 at this point. It means that support for the PlayStation 5 won’t be ending any time soon. Sony is always looking to push their products further, just announcing their new PlayStation PC monitor, complete with a DualSense charging dock. So, if the rumors continue, at the very least, we could expect an announcement of the PlayStation 6 in 2027.

The PlayStation 6 has been heavily rumored to follow the likes of Nintendo with a handheld console complete with a docking station.
