Bungie Marathon Release Date Confirmed: Sony Targets March 2026 Launch After Playtest Turnaround
Bungie’s troubled extraction shooter has been set for a new release window.
Sony’s CFO, Lin Tao, stated during the company’s earnings call that Bungie is “fully dedicated” and continuing the development of Marathon with plans to launch the game in the current fiscal year. The company’s fiscal year ends in March 2026. This leads us to believe that we could likely see Marathon release between February and March.
Many have seen the public struggles with Marathon throughout Bungie’s development of the game. From the game's flat-out plagiarism, with Bungie having to release a full statement, pointing towards employees that are no longer with the company using stolen assets, to the game not connecting with players.
Bungie was then forced to delay the release of the game to fix the known issues and replace art assets, not to mention, “the fun” to quote Embark studios, with ARC Raiders. However, Marathon may have done just that! With the recent delay and time to fix the game, a recent October playtest which was under a poorly executed NDA, had those speaking out about the turnaround of the game. Saying it's in a much better place with only a few fixes left before release and those who were able to get into the playtest appear to be hyping up the once very disappointing game.
Can Bungie change the sentiment around the Marathon? ARC Raiders is currently holding the top spot for the Extraction Shooter genre, but with months still in development with Marathon, will ARC Raiders fizzle off? Embark has a ten-year plan with a great-looking roadmap already laid out.
Will the hype of a new extraction game from Bungie be enough? Will it be F2P? Or come with a price tag? Let us know in our Discord your thoughts about Marathon. Play or Pass?
