Massive Entertainment Layoffs: Ubisoft Studio Cuts Staff After Star Wars Outlaws Flop, Focuses on The Division
Star Wars Struggles
There seems to be a continued spread of layoffs across the gaming industry. The latest to join the long list of company layoffs is Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, the team behind the most recent Star Wars release, Star Wars Outlaws.
In a post on X, Massive Ent stated “As part of our ongoing evolution and long-term planning, we have recently realigned our teams and resources to strengthen our roadmap” as they will continue their focus on The Division franchise.
Further in the statement, Massive Ent said they will introduce a “voluntary transition program, giving eligible team members the opportunity to take their next career step on their own terms.”
Meaning, Ubisoft Massive Ent will ask anyone that would like to leave the company the opportunity to do so, in which they would be supported by a comprehensive package that includes financial and career assistance.
Star Wars Outlaws has received updates post launch; however, the game never resonated, with fans receiving an average Metacritic score of 5.5. Clearly pushing Massive Ent to now begin their layoff process. The Division is one of Ubisoft’s largest IPs alongside Rainbow 6 Siege and Assassin’s Creed, all of which now fall under the Ubisoft-Tencent subsidiary.
There were no further details about which staff or how many will be affected in the process.
We’ve reached out for further details and will update you if any new information is heard back from Ubisoft.
UPDATE! We've received an official statement from Ubisoft on the matter.
"As part of our ongoing evolution and long-term planning, we have recently realigned our teams and resources to strengthen our roadmap, ensuring our continued focus on The Division franchise and the technologies, including Snowdrop and Ubisoft Connect, that power our games.
To support this transition responsibly, we introduced a voluntary career transition program, giving eligible team members the opportunity to take their next career step on their own terms, supported by a comprehensive package that includes financial and career assistance.
Massive Entertainment remains fully committed to our roadmap and to creating great experiences for players around the world, including The Division 2, The Division 2: Survivors, The Division Resurgence, and The Division 3. These projects continue with strength, focus, and ambition, and we look forward to sharing more in the future."
