Poker Night at the Inventory Remastered Review: Witty Banter Returns, But Is It Enough?

Poker Night at the Inventory Remastered Review: Witty Banter Returns, But Is It Enough?

Remakes are always common within the video game industry, though I’m not sure many saw Poker Night at the Inventory being added to that list.

The original title was released in 2010, and fans of poker - and more notably Team Fortress 2 players - took notice. The opportunity to earn items for TF2 was all one needed. Now, with this latest and much‑updated version of the game, it may be time to jump back in.

We have our returning cast of characters from their respective worlds: Max from the Sam & Max franchise, Tycho Brahe from the Penny Arcade webcomics, Strong Bad from the Homestar Runner series, and Red - the Heavy Weapons Guy - from Team Fortress 2, and the most popular fan favorite of the crew.

The presentation holds the charm of the past, though it features a much more updated feel and style. We are playing No‑Limit Texas Hold’em; those familiar with the world of poker will easily understand the inner workings of the game. However, I often found myself with mid‑range, off‑suit cards, making it hard to bluff my way to the top and cash in my chips.

Poker Night at the Inventory is fun. The cast rips on each other with witty one‑liners, but the game is ultimately an empty shell at best. There are unlocks to achieve, but it lacks the “carrot at the end of the stick” needed to keep players coming back for another round with the same cast of characters. It would have been nice to see additional characters introduced to the game, expanding the roster.

Poker is a social game meant to be played among friends. While the witty cast is fun at first, I found them to become tiresome and repetitive over time. There are no additional game modes to test your skills, and what is most noticeably missing is multiplayer.

This would have enhanced the overall experience - playing with friends instead of Max or Tycho. Allowing friends to join and socialize alongside these characters would have added to both the experience and the game’s longevity. I found myself jumping in each night for a few games, then bouncing out to play something else. The game is good, but it left me wanting more to do, more to interact with, and more players to play against.
