Hytale, the Minecraft-esque voxel-based survival game, will not be launching on Steam. Hypixel Studios, the team behind Hytale, recently received the rights back from Riot Games to continue developing the title. They have plans to launch the game on consoles, though it may never launch on Steam to avoid negative reviews during its early access launch.

Executive Director Patrick ‘Lyall’ Derbic answered a few questions about the upcoming title on their site. When discussing launching the game on Steam, Derbic said:

“We want to spend our time in Early Access working with the community and improving the game, rather than over-indexing on negative reviews from players who aren't as well-informed yet about what we are doing. Steam is a great marketing tool, but one that we might never need. This doesn't mean we will never be on Steam—just that we do not see the necessity of it yet.”

Does that mean the game will never come to the largest PC platform on the market? No, but it doesn’t seem that Derbic feels it’s necessary for their game either.

He continued regarding the console release, saying:

“No, the early access of Hytale will only be on PC (Mac and Linux still TBD). We are planning for a console release at a later stage, but this requires a lot of work on backend systems to make this a reality. For now, we would like to focus on making a good game first.”

Hytale will have its own proprietary launcher, where Hypixel Studios will have full control over the game with updates, bug fixes, quick patches, and—more importantly—the message to their community.

Hytale blends the freedom of a sandbox with the momentum of an RPG: explore a procedurally generated world full of dungeons, secrets, and a variety of creatures, then shape it block by block.
