Metal Gear Solid Future Revealed: New Game or More Remakes After Delta? Konami Speaks
Could We Get a New Metal Gear Solid Game?
Konami is currently undecided about whether to continue with more remakes after Metal Gear Solid Delta, or possibly pursue something new.
In an interview with Japanese outlet Real Sound, Yuji Korezumi, creative producer of METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER, and Noriaki Okamura, production producer, spoke about the future of the series and what might come next. Okamura (through translation) mentioned that the team is currently deciding on the next steps for Metal Gear and what future titles may follow Metal Gear Solid Delta—whether they will be remakes or something entirely new.
When discussing the difficult challenges of maintaining the series and respecting the original, Okamura went on to say this:
“With the departure of the original staff, we were concerned about how to carry on the series. There was talk of making a sequel, and it just kept coming up and disappearing... However, considering our ages and the decline in staff who know the Metal Gear series, it became clear that if we didn't do it now, it would be difficult to revive the series. Because it's such a great series, we decided to make it, thinking that now was the time to do it.”
He continued: “We've improved the graphics and controls for modern times, but we've kept the story and gameplay as original as possible. Our policy is to convey the spirit of previous titles to a new generation, without forcing new elements on them. We've received criticism and opinions, but gradually we've started to receive positive feedback, and communication with fans has progressed.”
Okamura was asked – What kind of works do you aim to create in the future? – of which he replied with:
“Right now, I'm thinking about what to make next. With Metal Gear, I've been able to create an opportunity for new people to experience my work, so I want to continue doing this.”
“However, we haven't yet decided what we'll be creating. There may be remakes, but we may also try new works. The Metal Gear series is like the history of video games, and it ranges from pixel art to cinematic expressions, so the remake method and expression method for each work is different. We don't intend to apply the methodology we created for MGS Delta to all of our works, but rather we will consider the best method for each work.”
“We are currently exploring specific plans for our next steps.”
What do you think is next for Metal Gear Solid? Without Hideo Kojima, the original creator, can the series really continue without him? Remakes provide guidelines for Konami to follow, but a completely new game in the series would certainly present unique challenges and may not resonate with fans as the series once did.
