Cloudheim Early Access Preview: A Vibrant RPG Adventure
Think Breath of the Wild meets Moonlighter
Soaring the clouds in search of new dungeons, loot and adventure has been my journey as I had the pleasure of getting an early look at Cloudheim. My journey took me to floating islands above the vibrant colourful landscapes with the goal of restoring the shattered islands and bringing back harmony to the world.
Cloudheim is a RPG adventure that feels more on the lighter side of RPG among other mechanics like its base building. Though this isn’t necessarily the hardcore RPG that most of us have been playing as of late. Its light-hearted approach and more simplistic elements are welcoming to those that enjoy the hook of gathering loot and resources, bringing them back to base, smelting the material into better loot that will become more useful for our blacksmith, cooking up a good meal or selling our items within our shop.
This is where the game changed for me. Cloudheim reminds me of Breath of the Wild-light, with a shop owner's touch similar to Moonlighter. Venture out, explore, fight off enemies, gather loot, head into dungeons to bring it all back to upgrade your base and sell your new-found loot or crafted gear. It’s this loop that kept me coming back.
Cloudheim doesn’t complicate things when it comes to building your base. Some will like this ease of building, while others like to seek pleasure in placing each pillar or wall. Base building is a simple matter of a button, the UPGRADE button! Your base, a customizable flying turtle base called Odin Shell, will be expanded, and you’re all set. There are other upgrades in certain areas, like the kitchen that require a bit more gold and upgrades, a new pot, BBQ station and the sorts. While other games as of late take a different approach. Quick and easy mechanics allow Cloudheim to be very accessible and easy for you and your friends to jump right in and get to the action.
The game is still in early development with an early access launch on July 18th and though the game is off to a great start, there are certain moments and finishing touches still required to bring the game up to its full potential. Enemies fall through the ground, textures will pop in from time to time, especially during loading. I can’t seem to sell unwanted weapons in my inventory with my shop and the map is glitchy to maneuver.
Though Cloudheim needs some finishing touches, the loop and game hook are there. Playing co-op with your friends brings an extra level to the game that will have many of us playing for hours on end. Fun combat with a bright and charming art style, I definitely recommend you check out Cloudheim.
